Crazy Ex Girlfriend:

Released: 2015
Genre: musical comedy
Setting: West Covina, California

Crazy Ex Girlfriend synopsis

Rebecca Bunch is the star of the show. She’s a hot shot lawyer, who after a chance encounter bumping into her old summer camp boyfriend, decides to uproot herself and follow him to West Covina, California where he lives. A butter ad asking ‘when was the last time you were truly happy?’ helps with the decision. She then tries to infiltrate his friend group and reconnect with him ‘by accident’.

Crazy Ex Girlfriend review

Crazy Ex Girlfriend might just be my favorite show of all time. There’s really so much to discuss with this musical comedy. Firstly, all the characters shine. Heather, the deadpan perpetual student, and Greg, the sarcastic but lovable bartender who always seems to have one eyebrow up are some of my favorites, aside from Rebecca of course. Then, the songs are actually funny. This one, A Diagnosis, is one of my favorites.

The plot and the characters go hand in hand. You can’t have one with out the other here, because it’s about Rebecca who is, well, crazy. Crazy Ex Girlfriend is feminist without shoving it down your throat (but if it is shoved down your throat it’s done in a funny way). See song: Let’s Generalize About Men. Just when you think there’s going to be a cliché, it becomes the exact opposite and many times the show will even nod towards the cliché you were expecting with a wink.

It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and addresses the audience while still allowing us the suspension of disbelief. Crazy how they pull that off! For example, in the song Who’s the New Guy (see below) that introduces Nathaniel as a main character, the lyrics voice the audience’s concerns. One of them being: ‘Who is this new guy being introduced this far into the season, he’s not relatable at all…’ And honestly, it was really helpful, lol.

My only complaints I’ll give in this Crazy Ex Girlfriend review are that it’s sometimes a little too crude for comfort and some of the songs aren’t so necessary.

Watch it on Netflix here and see my review of Rachel Bloom’s memoir here. The memoir is on Amazon here as well.

My rating: 9.5/10.
