The 7 books on my reading list and why I chose them…with updates.

what's on my reading list

Fun Home

I skimmed Fun Home years ago in Barnes and Noble and was drawn to Alison’s way of rehashing her life as a graphic novel: analytical, thoughtful, vulnerable. I’m looking forward to finally getting into Fun Home. Update: I read it and really enjoyed!

You can purchase Fun Home on Amazon here (looks like it’s on sale for $7).

Fleishman is in Trouble

Should you read a book after you’ve seen the show? Debatable. But I really liked the show and wanted more so I’m giving it a try. Fleishman is in Trouble is the city-set story of how a marriage slowly crumbled. We see both sides so well it’s hard to identify with one over the other. Update: I haven’t read it yet (maybe I’m intimidated by the size of it).

Check out the book Fleishman is in Trouble here. Watch the show on Hulu here.

Motherthing

Put a daughter-in-law hoping for a mother figure, and her cruel, suicidal mother-in-law together and you’ll have a disaster. Then her mother-in-law’s ghost won’t stop haunting her either, so she takes matters into her own hands??? Update: Loved it, see my review here.

Trick Mirror

Trick Mirror is a collection of essays on self-delusion. I find, if essays are hard hitting and to the point, they can grab my attention more than a novel can. Let’s see if this is the case with Trick Mirror. Update: It was great, see my review here.

A Touch of Jen

A book about obsession? I’ll buy it. From the description it seems like a wild ride. I’m not too into anything supernatural, but I can make an exception, especially if it’s psychedelic-inspired! Update: I liked it…kinda. See my character analysis of one of the characters, Alicia, here.

Your Driver is Waiting

As a regular user of driving apps, I knew I wanted to hear this one out. Damani is holding her and her sick mom afloat with her driving job when she meets an interesting passenger, someone she could possibly date. Update: Couldn’t get into it.

Open Water

Open Water is the poetic love story between two Black british artists. I’m not into reading romance but this seems to go beyond that with an inquisitive quality, which I’m guessing might be similar to On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous. See it in my list of best memoirs to add to your TBR. Update: For some reason I wasn’t drawn to continue reading it. Maybe I’ll give it another shot.
