At a loss for what to read next?

The good news is it’s not the end of the world if you don’t like the book you’re reading. You can simply set it down and move onto another.

Of course, there are some people that feel they need to finish a book or show even though they hate it. Like my grandpa. He’d talk about how much he hated Planet of the Apes (trailer here) to my mother. In these instances she would say, “Then don’t watch it.” He would then say, “You don’t understand, it’s a series.” And that’s was that.

Whether you’re that type or not, there are things you can do to increase your odds of immensely enjoying your next read.

But first, inspiration.

It can come from anywhere: What your friend has on her bookshelf. Social media. A book blog (like this one). A cover that pops out at you as you’re browsing the isles. Then make sure it’s a genre you like. And (obviously) read the back to see if it seems interesting.

Next, (and this is optional) you can look up some reviews of the book from people who have similar tastes to yours.

Most importantly

But most importantly, (and it’s something I many times forget to do!) read the first 5-10 pages before buying. I can’t stress enough how important this is. Don’t just buy based on the reviews or the description on the back. The reading flow needs to keep your interest enough that you’re pulled to keep going after those first pages.

Then, let’s say you’ve finished the book and you didn’t like the ending. Fine, we all have opinions. But you can’t say it was a waste of time if you enjoyed the experience.

This should really help you narrow down to high quality books tailored to your tastes. Happy reading!
