3 new Netflix releases I’m looking forward to watching…and my thoughts afterwards

I looked into a number of their new releases, but these are the two movies and one series coming to Netflix this fall that really caught my interest. I don’t think I’ll be watching The Uglies, The Lonely Planet and Monsters and may edit the post later to share why.

1. Nobody Wants This

A relationship that seems mismatched but actually isn’t? I’ll watch. Nobody Wants This is a somewhat autobiographical series is about the struggles of being with the right person because being in a great relationship can be hard too! The relationship at hand is between a sex podcast host who doesn’t believe in God and a young orthodox rabbi who obviously does.  All 10 episodes of Nobody Wants This season 1 premiere on Netflix Sept. 26th.

My thoughts after watching Nobody Wants This

Nobody Wants This is Crazy Ex Girlfriend meets The Good Place…a combo I loved. Joanne is a comic relief but still has the depth Kristen Bell’s characters often have. Noah is one of the coolest Rabbi‘s portrayed on screen. Because he’s Reform he doesn’t have to follow all the laws of Judaism but tries to follow the most important ones. One of them is marrying within the faith, putting their relationship in a tough spot. And Noah isn’t really Joanne’s usual type, as her sister says, she sees her more with a cult leader.

The show was a great balance between romance and comedy and I think I think it leans more towards the comedy side – a great thing. It deals with real complex subjects so it’s not one of those shows where ‘nothing really matters,’ and this makes it all the more watchable.

Though I must say the female Jewish characters on the show aren’t portrayed in the best light. Bina, Noah‘s mother, is the most intense of all and pretty terrifying. Noah’s brother’s wife is very negative and controlling. Then Rebecca, Noah’s ex is still very attached and wants to do whatever it takes to get him back.

My verdict: give Nobody Wants This a watch!

2. The Platform 2

The Platform 1 really struck me. In a new fangled prison-like building inmates are fed everyday with a sprawling feast laid out on a platform for them. There’s only one catch: the platform passes through the levels of the building starting at the top and stays on each level for 2 minutes. Those in the middle levels are grateful for the leftovers…the bottom end up starving. See my review for it here.

Anyway, I don’t see a point for a second movie but since the first one was so well done I’m looking forward to seeing it. The Platform 2 will be on Netflix October 4th.

My thoughts after watching The Platform 2

It seems like I’m on board with the general consensus in my opinion on The Platform 2: It just didn’t cut it. The sequel was too confusing, violent and didn’t invite you to look at its messages enough.

In a way it was true to life. It was what you’d expect to happen in a system like this after enough time: a movement to combat the circumstances and make it more fair. Rules like everyone can only eat “their” dish were set in place by another inmate. But then there was the issue of enforcing the rules. Did the benefits of the rules justify the control? This often happens in real life. The roots of every political movement are answers to a problem, ways to help people. Then they morph into something much bigger and divide into many offshoots.

My verdict: skip the sequel but see the first movie if you haven’t already.

3. His Three Daughters

His Three Daughters looked like it could be interesting even before I saw that critics considered it one of the finest films of the year, with a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I didn’t see much plot going on in the trailer, but it seemed real enough to draw me in. It’s about three grown sisters who are brought back together under one roof as they stay with their father on his deathbed, allowing the past to unravel.

His Three Daughters will be on Netflix Sept 20th.

My thoughts after watching His Three Daughters

I might get hate for this but I did not enjoy His Three Daughters! It got great reviews but as I read into them further I saw they were mostly from an older generation that unfortunately had to witness their own parents passing. It seems like it served as a cathartic release for them and a way to reflect on their experiences. Thank God that’s not the case with me and most people of my age group (millennials). A movie should be able to have a meaningful effect on you without having the exact circumstances happen.

Its slow, psychologically driven, low budget, indie quality is something I often really like but here it needed more. It needed to lead up to something more significant than it did, and if not at least be more real. It was missing in both plot and depth.

*Spoiler alert:* A review hinted that the daughters may have planned their father’s death this whole time for money. That was not clear to me at all. But if it was the case that would have been something to tie it all together.

My verdict: skip His Three Daughters unless this is a topic that you really relate to.

Have you seen these 3 new Netflix releases? Would love to know your thoughts on them!
